Do’s and Don’ts of Invisalign
Invisalign is a market-leading, revolutionary dental treatment, replacing the old wire and bracket brace design with clear, removable trays. Across the globe, people are catching on quickly to this way of reclaiming a perfect smile.
That said, something so transformative needs looking after. If you use Invisalign or are considering doing so, there are some essential ‘dos and don’ts’ to make sure you get the most from your investment.
Do: wear Invisalign trays for 20+ hours a day
Invisalign aligners rely on consistent use to apply steady but gentle pressure to your teeth. Experts agree that if you don’t keep them in your mouth, 20-22 hours out of 24, you might not get the results you want.
Don’t: forget to brush your teeth after every meal or snack
Aligners can easily trap debris, pressing it against your teeth and leading to tooth decay. The simplest approach is always to remove the aligners when eating or drinking, brush your teeth and rinse your tray before putting it back in.
Do: keep your aligners in their Invisalign case
Since the case is shaped to protect them, this is the best place to store your aligners. If left lying around, they will not only get dirty but might get lost or snatched up by a pet! If you develop a good, consistent routine, it’s easier to keep track of your clear aligners.
Don’t: expose your Invisalign trays to heat
When washing your aligners, use lukewarm water, as excessive heat can warp the trays. Similarly, don’t leave them on a hot surface, and don’t forget to remove them before enjoying a hot drink. Warped aligners won’t work as they are designed to.
Do: quit smoking
There are many good reasons to stop smoking, the impact on your aligners being one of them. If you smoke while wearing Invisalign trays, they will quickly become discoloured, and if you smoke with them out, you probably won’t meet the 20-22 hour wearing requirement. Why not seize the moment, and quit smoking today?
Don’t: be harsh
If you use harsh, abrasive or coloured cleaning products, you risk scratching or discolouring the aligners, making them more noticeable when you wear them. Stick with a clear, gentle cleanser and always brush them with a dedicated, soft toothbrush.
Do: soak your Invisalign trays each day
The mouth is a breeding ground for bacteria, so make sure to soak your trays in Invisalign cleaning crystals or a denture cleaner. Once soaking is done, clean them with a soft toothbrush to remove any lingering particles, and rinse them again before use.
Don’t: eat or drink without removing your aligners
Invisalign aligners are not designed to withstand the pressure of chewing. Similarly, they are designed to be clear, and therefore discreet – it’s in the name! Eating and drinking with aligners will discolour the trays, making them more visible.
