What are dermal fillers?
You may have been considering dermal fillers for a short while, or a long time, but aren’t really sure what to expect from them. What are they? Are they safe? There are lots of questions circling this popular aesthetic treatment, especially if you’re not one hundred percent familiar with them. Here at Lion Dental Centre in Stourbridge, we want to make sure all of our patients are fully informed on the treatments they are considering. Let us enlighten you on everything there is to know about dermal fillers!
What are dermal fillers made of?
Dermal fillers are made from a gel-like substance that naturally occurs in our bodies. This substance is a sugar known as hyaluronic, and it contributes to skin laxity and volume. This makes it incredibly safe to use during treatment.
Is dermal filler permanent?
No, dermal filler isn’t permanent! Because it closely replicates a natural bodily sugar, it is also naturally broken down by the body. The body works to dissolve the hyaluronic acid, naturally recycling it and flushing it out of your system. You won’t feel this process, the only way you’ll notice it is when your treated area starts to go back to its normal size.
Will dermal fillers stretch my skin?
This is actually a common misconception of dermal filler. Some people may be worried that dermal fillers permanently stretch the skin. We understand this, we’re injecting a sugar into your skin and creating more volume so why wouldn’t the skin stretch? It doesn’t stretch, however, so when the filler is broken down your treated area will return to its original shape and structure. Don’t worry, when we say dermal fillers are temporary we also mean their effects are!
Where can dermal fillers treat?
Dermal fillers are a versatile treatment and can be applied to many areas of the mid-to-lower face. For example, they’re particularly effective at contouring the cheeks, plumping the lips, and filling loose skin to soften nose-to-mouth lines. The amount we use and where we use it is entirely tailored to you and your needs, so no one patient receives the same treatment.
Should I expect any side effects?
This treatment is incredibly safe and reliable, so it’s fairly simple to perform. However, it does come with some minor side effects. Your treatment area will be swollen for up to two days, and it may feel hot and a little irritated. This is totally normal, and it should subside without any further concern. You could also experience some minor bruising at the injection points, but it’s perfectly safe to cover these with makeup or topical healing cream.
Are they different to wrinkle reduction injections?
While both of these treatments work to rejuvenate the face, they tackle very different concerns. Dermal fillers replace lost volume and contour areas of the face by adding structure. They focus on replenishing tissue rather than targeting wrinkles. Wrinkle reduction injections, however, treat fine lines on the face that are caused by over-expressive muscles. They target areas in the upper face such as the forehead, frown lines, and crow’s feet. We also offer wrinkle reduction injections at our Stourbridge practice!
