Who Is Not Suitable For Dental Implants?
Our leading dental practice, based in Stourbridge, brings you the latest advancements in treatments such as teeth straightening, teeth whitening and even tooth replacement. In this post, we’ll discuss dental implants, a fantastic solution for those with missing teeth, who are looking for a permanent, durable and natural-looking replacement.
Can I have dental implants?
Of course, one of the most important things you’ll want to know about the treatment is whether it’s suitable for you. The good news is, in the majority of cases, tooth implants in Stourbridge are the preferred solution for tooth loss.
However, there are some cases where dental implant treatment may not be recommended:
- Those with gingivitis or periodontitis
- Those with gum or bone recession
- Those who smoke
- Those on certain medications
However, it should be noted that even if there is gum or bone recession, it may be possible to use grafting to provide a firm base for your tooth implant. Also, the treatment always begins with a consultation, where we’ll determine if you’re eligible.
What kind of dental implants are there?
There are three types. Single dental implants replace individual teeth; implant-supported bridges replace several teeth; implant-retained dentures replace whole sets of teeth.
What alternatives to dental implants are there?
In those with multiple missing teeth, non-implant bridgework and dentures can also be offered. However, these aren’t a permanent solution, and may not be as durable as appliances supported by tooth implants. The reason for this is that tooth implants involve placing a metal post into your gum, which then bonds with the underlying bone to create a secure anchor for your replacement tooth.
What if I don’t replace my missing tooth/teeth?
You could potentially develop problems in the future, particularly bone and gum recession, as well as further loose and missing teeth if you don’t replace missing teeth. This can also make it harder to bite, chew and eat; affect the appearance of your smile and self-esteem; create problems with your speech; and even make areas of your face appear to sag since healthy teeth and gums create a structure for the mouth, lips and chin.
